No Way Out
When the curtain was pushed back
And the blind was pulled up,
I saw a little clearer.
This room offered little space to grow.
My body pressed against all four walls
And I was ready to burst out.
Through the window, I saw people.
They walked an uneven line on the pavement--
Not always straight but not a pattern.
I moved closer to the window,
There was a girl I used to know--she had
Hair like me, ears, nose, eyes...
I squinted to see her better.
She danced through the town,
Greeting everyone and smiling.
I blinked slowly and the girl was in my window
Staring at me. She put her palm on the class
And I placed mine against hers.
I copied her stare--she turned away
And I followed hitting the door to my room.
As I pushed, I heard the girl laughing.
I couldn't escape. There was no door at all.
I was a caged animal.
I couldn't be set free.
